Karon Deopersaud, 47, was busted after troopers received frantic 911 calls about a black Toyota RAV4 barreling north in the southbound lanes near Jones Beach State Park just after midnight, authorities said. Troopers swooped in and stopped the vehicle near Exit W4E (Southern State Parkway), averting a potential disaster.
Deopersaud reeked of alcohol and failed sobriety tests, registering a staggering .19% BAC—more than twice the legal limit, police said.
He was charged with felony driving while intoxicated (previous conviction within 10 years), felony driving while intoxicated, misdemeanor reckless endangerment and aggravated unlicensed operation, as well as multiple vehicle and traffic law infractions, according to state police.
Deopersaud is set to face a judge in Nassau County District Court on March 12 at 9 a.m.
New York State Police slammed wrong-way and impaired driving as a deadly menace, urging drivers to make smart choices before getting behind the wheel.
